Huffington Post - To Meat Or Not To Meat

By Laura Silverman
February 21, 2011

"I've spent quite a lot of time ruminating over the notion of eating meat. Like a cow chewing its cud, I have tried to carefully digest what I've gleaned from reading Fast Food Nation, Omnivore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food, Eating Animals and Food Matters, and watching Supersize Me and the incredibly eye-opening Food Inc. At the very least, I think I can say I'm a conscious eater. I'm not going to delve into the horrifying truth of how government and industry conspired to convince us that we all need to have a big slab of (corn-fed) meat at the center of most of our meals on a daily basis, I'm just going to say that we should all be eating a great deal less of the stuff - for our own sake and that of the planet. But a recent article in Vanity Fair, where fluffy blonde wellness 'guru' Kathy Freston (Tom Freston's wife, so she can't be far from her own show on Oprah's new network) convinces a die-hard British carnivore to turn vegan really raised my hackles because of its facile presentation of this very complex issue..."

NY Times - Diet: High Fiber to Combat Death and Disease

By Roni Caryn Rabin
February 21, 2011

"A study of almost 400,000 people aged 50 to 71 has found a strong link between a high-fiber diet and a longer life. Specifically, subjects who ate a diet rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables (adding up to 29 grams of fiber per day for men, 26 grams for women) were 22 percent less likely to die after nine years than those who ate the least fiber (13 and 11 grams per day), according to the study, in Archives of Internal Medicine..."

NY Times Opinionator - How to Make Oatmeal... Wrong

By Mark Bittman
February 22, 2011

"There's a feeling of inevitability in writing about McDonald's latest offering, their 'bowl full of wholesome' - also known as oatmeal. The leading fast-food multinational, with sales over $16.5 billion a year (just under the GDP of Afghanistan), represents a great deal of what is wrong with American food today. From a marketing perspective, they can do almost nothing wrong; from a nutritional perspective, they can do almost nothing right, as the oatmeal fiasco demonstrates..."

The Telegraph - Eat less red meat, [British] Government scientists warn

By Patrick Hennessy
February 19, 2011

"Consumers will be told to eat no more than [1.1lb] of red or processed meat each week, or [2.5oz] a day, under recommendations to be issued by the Coalition this week. The daily total is the equivalent of three rashers of bacon - while the weekly amount would be reached by eating one large steak, a pork chop, two sausages and a small portion of beef bolognese sauce. A Coalition source said: 'It is important that people are not put off eating red meat entirely - but it would be irresponsible to ignore the potential health risks. The advice is very clear.'..."

Huffington Post - Caramel Coloring in Soda: What You Should Know About This Innocent-Sounding Ingredient

By Michael F. Jacobson, Center for the Science in the Public Interest
February 16, 2011

"Food marketers have long had a special knack for euphemism... One such case is an innocent-sounding ingredient that appears on Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and other soft drinks: 'caramel coloring.' Now, I've long urged Americans to drink less soda. It's a nutritionally worthless beverage that provides nothing of benefit to the diet, but whose sugars promote weight gain, obesity, diabetes, and other health problems. Another typical soda ingredient, phosphoric acid, rots teeth. Caffeine is a mildly addictive stimulant drug..."

The new science-based Dietary Guidelines for Americans, released Jan. 31 by the Department of Agriculture and of Health and Human Services, are comprehensive, sensible, attainable, and, for most people, affordable. They offer a wide variety of dietary options to help you eat better for fewer calories without undue sacrifice of dining pleasure..."

Civil Eats - GM and Oranic Co-Existence: Why We Really Just Can't Get Along

By Paula Crossfield
February 9, 2011

"Last Friday, the USDA announced the partial deregulation of genetically modified sugar beets, defying a court order to complete an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in advance of a decision. This move follows on the heels of the full deregulation late last month of genetically modified (GM) alfalfa, the fourth most common row crop in the United States, which is most often used as feed for cattle. If you eat beef, or take milk and sugar in your coffee (and even if you don’t), here is why you should care: The move could put organic foods at risk for contamination and make it more expensive..."

The Atlantic - The Salmonella Index: The Best and Worse States for Food Poisoning

By Douglas A. McIntyre, Michael B. Sauter, and Ashley C. Allen
January 25, 2011

"As last year's Salmonella outbreak and the unethical practices of egg mogul Jack DeCoster proved, our food supply is not always as safe as expected. One problem is that numerous systems exist for reporting foodborne illnesses on a state by state basis, and the difficulty of analyzing the data makes keeping food free from contamination a challenge. Obviously, we cannot mitigate or eliminate problems if we cannot evaluate them systematically. That's why the Center for Science in the Public Interest has reviewed 10 years of records from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to determine which states do a good job of detecting outbreaks of foodborne illnesses. The newly released study is titled All Over the Map: A 10-Year Review of State Outbreak Reporting (PDF)..."
